Research in the Rehmann group applies microbial and enzymatic bioprocesses to convert agri-food and industrial side-streams into value-added chemicals and fuels. Current directions include the fractionation of biomass residues using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), the production of platform acids such as itaconic and lactic acid through designed microbial consortia, yeast-based biosurfactant (sophorolipid) fermentation, and the integration of bioelectrochemical systems for resource recovery and mine-water treatment. The work is highly interdisciplinary, and there are occasional openings for new graduate students.
