MEng Co-op Program
The Faculty of Engineering offers a Co-op option for the Master of Engineering (MEng) program.
This option will allow MEng students to complete a Co-op in an industrial organization to enhance experiential learning and engage in other learning activities of practical interest. It will also provide an opportunity for students to gain practical experience relevant to their academic field that will assist them in their career advancements.
Effective September 1, 2023, MEng students who start the program in any of the three terms (Fall, Winter, or Summer) will be eligible for the co-op option.
The co-op term will be the last term of their academic program, according to the following:
- 4th term for students registered in the MEng program
- 5th term for students registered in teh Combined MEng+GDip program
- For students who are eligible for extended co-op term(s), the extra term(s) will extend beyond their first co-op term.
The Co-option will be available once students start the program (the option will not be offered at the time of admission). Students can request for this option under any of the following cases:
- International students applying for the “Co-op work permit” prior to securing a Co-op.
- International students who have successfully secured a Co-op and would like to apply for the “Co-op work permit”.
- Domestic students (Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents) who have successfully secured a Co-op.
To Register:
- Students must be registered as full-time students. Students are also required to submit an application through Western Engineering Career Services and pay $125 application fee. Western Engineering Career Services will provide support and services to students seeking Co-op positions.
- Students can request for the Co-op option prior to the end of their second term in the program.
- For international students (Cases I and II), if they are not able to secure an approved Co-op work permit before the end of their third term, their registration will be changed back to the original 3-term MEng program to which they were admitted and they complete the original MEng program.
- If a student's Co-op is cancelled prior to its commencement, their registration will be changed back to the original MEng program.
Registration Deadlines:
- December 15th for students who began the MEng program in September
- April 15th for students who began the MEng program in January
- August 15th for students who began the MEng program in May
At the beginning of the Co-op term, students will register in the Co-op Module and pay a tuition fee of $550 plus full-time ancillary fees for the Co-op term. Through this registration they will maintain the full-time registration status in the program. Each registered student must complete the Co-op and submit a report at the end of the Co-op term.
