A Message from the Graduate Chair

Chair-Clare-Robinson_photo.jpgOn behalf of the Department Chair, our Faculty and staff, I invite and welcome you to consider Western University for your graduate training. Western University’s Civil & Environmental Engineering program, ranked #1 in Canada and #18 worldwide, by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, is renowned for its excellence, nationally and internationally, due to its outstanding academic curricula, award-winning professors and state-of-the-art facilities. Western University is a research intensive institution, well- known for providing the best student experience, and these characteristics permeate our Graduate programs in Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Our Research Centers and Institutes actively participate in the delivery of our graduate program; our Department has world recognized strength in wind engineering associated with the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory and the newly established Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) Research Institute. The structural engineering group has gained a strong international reputation through extensive research productivity and service in many national and international professional and scientific committees. Another area of strength of the department is associated with the internationally renowned Geotechnical Research Centre. The structural and geotechnical stream also benefit for the research conducted at the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and the Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes. Our graduate training in Environmental and Water resources engineering is enhanced through the efforts lead by the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and the Research for Subsurface Transport and Remediation (RESTORE) group. In terms of Graduate courses, our renowned Faculty members have introduced state-of-the-art research methodology (from their own studies) into the graduate curricula and the inclusion of real world problems, case studies and field activities in several of our courses. These types of courses will provide you with experience working with practicing engineers and scientist and to develop excellent communication skills. The practical nature of most of our research interests is recognized by our students.

I personally believe that the main strength of our program is the quality of our past and current students who, through collaborative effort, have enabled our program to succeed. I invite you once again to be part of us and become a student of Western’s Civil & Environmental Engineering Graduate program!
