Advanced Shop Training I

This training course will cover basic machine concepts and operation (mill and lathe) along with basic fabrication concepts and the operation of typical equipment used. Students will also be introduced to key concepts and terms used in industry, thus preparing them for future employment. Students will be expected to manufacture a steel tack hammer. The manufacturing of the tack hammer will touch on and re-enforce all basic concepts covered during the training program.  Students will be able to take the hammer with them once the training is completed.

Cost: The course registration fee is $10 to cover the cost of materials 

Who can register?: This training course is open to Undergraduate & Graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering 

 

Training Session Runtimes:

A training session will be run each week. You may sign up for a session up to three weeks before it begins and at latest one day before it runs. Signing up for a session requires committing to the full 12-hour session run over Friday and Saturday (of the same week) at the following times:

Friday: 6:00pm - 10:00pm

Saturday: 8:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Maximum of 6 students per weekend training session

Important Information:

Closed toed shoes, long pants, and safety glasses are required. Short sleeves are recommended, and loose long sleeves are prohibited. Long hair must be tied back.

While in the shop, students are prohibited from touching anything not identified by the instructor as being the property of the Advanced Shop Training Program. Participants are not permitted to take ANY photographs and/or videos and must remain in the designated are of the shop at all times. Cell phone use is prohibited while in the shop.

Industry experts from Amphenol Borisch Technologies have partnered up with Western Engineering to deliver monthly workshops that will provide real-world practical skills on the following topics:
