Why did you choose Engineering?

When I was a kid, I really enjoyed learning how things are made and work, and I still do. So, when I first learned about engineering in sixth grade and since I always liked my math and science classes in school, I decided I want to be when I grew up. As I got older, I learned how engineers do not just learn about math and science, but the main part of engineering is the application of these concepts to solve problems. I chose engineering because of my love of understanding how things worked, knack for problem solving and enjoyment of my math and science classes, I chose to pursue engineering.

Why Western Engineering?

I chose Western Engineering because it has a general first year, a beautiful campus and an amazing community. Going into first year, I was still undecided on what discipline I wanted to pursue. Since Western has a general first-year, I was able to take a wide array of engineering courses before making a decision. Western Engineering also has an amazing community within its undergraduate programs. Everyone is very friendly and will to lend a helping hand which I think is very unique to Western Engineering. Western’s campus is also very beautiful, and I remember being so impressed with how pretty the campus looked when I visited the university for the first time.

Why Civil Engineering?

When deciding which discipline to choose I thought about which courses in first year I really enjoyed, and the one I enjoyed the most was Statics. I found the course very interesting, and I really enjoyed going to class and doing assignments. I like that the concepts are very tangible, and I am able to see them around in my everyday life.

Why did you choose to do a Dual Degree with Ivey HBA?

Before coming to Western I had never taken any business courses, but in first year I was required to take a Business for Engineers course. The course was run by the pre-Ivey faculty here at Western and structured very similarly to Ivey classes. I found that I really enjoyed the first-year business course and it had great applicability to engineering. Since Western offers the ability to do a dual degree with business, I thought it would be a great way to pursue two subjects that I am very interested in and are very related to each other.

What was your first-year residence experience like?

In first year, I lived in Saugeen, which is a traditional style residence, in a double room. While I was a little nervous about sharing a room with another person, but I found that I really enjoyed having someone who was always around to go down to the cafeteria with or hang out. Another thing I really enjoyed about traditional style residence was how easy it was to be social. If you wanted to see people you could leave your door open while you worked or hung out and see people as they passed by, but if you wanted quiet to study you could always close your door.

What is your favourite study spot on campus?

During the school year, my favourite study spot is at the benches on the second floor of ACEB because it has tons of outlets and is in front of the big windows looking out onto Western Road, providing natural light. Sometimes I can even see my friends walking down Western Road from this spot! However, during the exam period, I prefer to study in a group with my friends. To do this I like to book a room in ACEB or SEB to study together while being free to discuss topics or write out concepts on whiteboards.
