The Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO) recently held its annual conference, where students and industry professionals came together to network and celebrate their peers’ successes in the field.

At this year’s conference, the Western Water Chapter (WWC) won Student Chapter of the Year – a category where eight other Ontario universities were considered for the award.

WWC is a WEAO/Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) Student Chapter made up of seven executive members and approximately 75 general members that include graduate and undergraduate students and faculty members who are interested in getting involved in the water and wastewater industries.

The Chapter provides an opportunity for students to learn about and network within the water and wastewater industry in Ontario. This is done by hosting events, which can range from tours, webinars, seminars, socials and career/networking events.

“Attending our events allows students in their junior years to be exposed to careers in water and environment, while those in their upper years and graduate students are given the opportunity to build their professional network,” said WWC President and PhD student in Water Resources Engineering and Management, Patrick Breach.

WWC events range from social gatherings to tours of the Upper Thames Conservation Authority, wastewater and drinking water treatment plants, industrial facilities such as Trojan UV Technologies, and the annual Industry Outreach Night and Career Showcase events. WWC also placed third in this year’s Engineers Canada’s Engineering Month Initiative Ontario-wide competition for its annual Career Showcase event.

“Receiving the WEAO Student Chapter of the Year Award has been a great honour as well as an inspiration for us to strive harder to reach more students and make a lasting impact on their time at Western Engineering,” said Breach.
