A Message from the Associate Dean (Research)

This year, Western University and Western Engineering have made great strides in our efforts to achieve excellence on the world stage. We have focused our efforts on strengthening our research impact and infrastructure to attract and support the best faculty members and students while enhancing opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

Through collaborations across the university, as well as networks nationally and internationally, Western Engineering researchers are working together in research clusters to address large-scale issues and industry needs. Specifically, we are focusing on four main areas of research strength, including:

Sustainability, environment, resiliency and adaptive systems;

Biomedical engineering, technology in health and medicine;

Innovative materials and biomaterials;

Ubiquitous information and communications.

As you will see in this edition of the Western Engineering Research e-Newsletter, we have many interdisciplinary and collaborative research programs currently underway in each of our four key areas of research strength. The stories included in this e-Newsletter show the impact our researchers are making in society, with the help of graduate students and colleagues across campus. We are committed to enhancing and fostering these opportunities by building research collaborations in our local community and across the globe.

We will continue to keep you updated regarding our progress via this Research e-Newsletter. I also encourage you to contact us (we-researchandgrad@uwo.ca) if you foresee opportunities for us to work together or if you would like to learn more about the work being done in our faculty, including the research taking place in our eight research centres and institutes:

Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL)

Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composite Materials (FPC)

Geotechnical Research Centre (GRC)

Innovation Centre for Information Engineering (iCIE)

Institute for Chemicals and Fuels for Alternative Resources (ICFAR)

International Composites Research Centre (ICRC)

Particle Technology Research Centre (PTRC)

WindEEE Research Institute (WindEEE)

Best regards,
