New students starting September 2021 (Frequently Asked Questions)

The FAQ's are arranged based on various categories on incoming students. Please click the appropriate categorie below. Also, note that all immigration related information is accurate as of June 24, 2021. This information will be updated as we receive any new details from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Canada. 

MEng International Students

Can I come to Canada to start a program in September?

To be able to enter Canada as a student:

  • You must have a valid study permit, or have been approved for a study permit. 
  • You've completed an Immigration medical examination, if required, and the results are still valid
  • Your DLI must be on the list of DLI's with approved COVID-19 readiness plans. Western's readiness plan was approved in November 2020 and is on the list of approved DLIs. 

What are the quarantine requirements for students arriving in Canada from abroad?

If you are an international student who is eligible to enter Canada and is fully vaccinated with a Health Canada-approved vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD and Janssen/Johnson & Johnson) you may be exempt from quarantine requirements, including the three-day mandatory stay at a government-approved hotel, 14-day quarantine and the Day 8 COVID-19 test. For more information and full details on the requirements to qualify for this exemption, visit the Government of Canada website

Note that you must still register your travel and quarantine plan with Western and be prepared to quarantine in case it is deteremined at the border that you do not meet all the conditions for the quarantine exemption. Find all the information on what steps to take before you travel on Western University’s International Arrival page.

Will my program be in-person or online in September?

Faculty of Engineering is planning to offer graduate courses in person for Fall 2021. However, if you are not able to travel to Canada for a valid reason (e.g. delay in the study permit approval), you can register and start your program online (some courses will be offered in the hybrid format, allowing students to register and attend remotely). To take a course remotely, you must provide evidence of the valid reason for not arriving at Western.

Note that starting your program without a valid study permit may affect Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). In most scenarios, you must have a study permit. However, you are still eligible for a PGWP if you study online while outside Canada in the following scenarios, provided you:

  • Are enrolled in a PGWP-eligible program began, or will begin, a program in any semester from spring 2020 to fall 2021 (all your time studying online outside Canada until December 31, 2021, counts toward the length of a PGWP) 
  • Have a study permit or approval for a study permit, or applied for a study permit prior to starting their program and are eventually approve
  • Meet all other PGWP criteria

I am currently in Canada and have a valid study permit (or have been approved for one). Can I begin my program in September?

Yes, you can register and start the program. 

 

Will I be required to provide official/final transcripts before I can register in the program?

You will be obliged to provide official/final transcripts. Electronic transcript submission is acceptable, however, it must be emailed directly to Western from Institution’s Registrar Office. The email address to directly submit electronic transcripts is: gradapps@uwo.ca. 

If due to the COVID lockdown, your previous institution is not able to provide official transcript before your registration at Western, then you could provide official transcript at a later time, however, you must provide a proof your previous institution is closed and unable to produce transcripts.

Can I defer my admission to January/May/September 2022?

You must pay your tuition deposit to secure your spot in the program prior to requesting a deferral. Your deferral request is reviewed and decided by the program. If a deferral is approved, the tuition deposit will be applied to your new start term. For international students starting the program in September 2021, we recommend postponing your decision to request admission deferral until the third week of August, to allow your study permit application to be processed (by early August).  

MEng Domestic Students (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)

Do I need to be on Campus to start my program in September 2021?

Yes, the Faculty of Engineering is planning to offer all graduate courses in person for Fall 2021. some courses will be offered in the hybrid format, allowing students to register and attend remotely who are not able to come to campus due to medical or related reasons (need approval from Western’s Accessible Education).

Will I be required to provide official/final trancripts before I can register in the program?

You will be obliged to provide official/final transcripts. Electronic transcript submission is acceptable, however, it must be emailed directly to Western from Institution's Registrar's Office

MESc/PhD International Students

Can I come to Canada to start a program in January?

To be able to enter Canada as a student: 

  • You must have a valid study permit or have been approved for a study permit
  • You’ve completed an immigration medical examination, if required, and the results are still valid
  • Your DLI must be on the list of DLIs with approved COVID-19 readiness plans. Western’s readiness plan was approved in November 2020 and is on the list of approved DLIs.

You must also consults with your supervisor, if you are not able to arrive at Western in September and its impact on your research activities.

If I start my program remotely outside Canada, will it affect my funding package?

Your funding package will remain the same but there are restrictions with regards to the access to funds. Please contact your Graduate office for more details.

Can I be employed by Western University (for example, as a Teaching Assistant)?

If you do not have a study permit and a Canadian Social Insurance Number, you cannot be employed.

MESc/PhD Domestic Students (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)

Yes, as Western is planning to return to in-person learning, students are expected to be on campus, as much as possible. Please consult with your Supervisor and Graduate Program.
