New students starting September 2022 (Frequently Asked Questions)

The FAQs are arranged based on various categories of incoming students. Please click the appropriate category below. Note that all immigration-related information is accurate as of July 4, 2022. This information will be updated as we receive any new details from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. 

MEng International Students

Can I come to Canada to start a program in September?

To be able to enter Canada as a student:

  • You must have a valid study permit
  • As of January 15, 2022, international students who are 18 years or older must be fully vaccinated with the approved vaccine to enter Canada. 

What are the quarantine requirements for students arriving in Canada from abroad?

Will my program be in person or online in September?

The Faculty of Engineering is offering all graduate courses in person for Fall 2022. Exceptions may only be considered for students with immigration-related delays. Affected students should contact the Faculty Graduate Office to further discuss (wegraduate@uwo.ca). 

 

I am currently in Canada and have a valid study permit (or have been approved for one). Can I begin my program in September?

Yes, you can register and start the program. 

 

Will I be required to provide official/final transcripts before I can register in the program?

You will be required to provide official/final transcripts. Electronic transcript submission is acceptable, however, it must be emailed directly to Western from your institution’s Registrar's Office. The email address to directly submit electronic transcripts is: gradapps@uwo.ca. 

Can I defer my admission to January 2023 due to study permit processing delays?

You must pay your tuition deposit to secure your spot in the program prior to requesting a deferral. Your deferral request is reviewed and decided by your Graduate program. If a deferral is approved, the tuition deposit will be applied to your new start term. For international students starting the program in September 2022, we recommend postponing your decision to request admission deferral until the third week of August, to allow your study permit application to be processed (by early August).  

MEng Domestic Students (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)

Do I need to be on Campus to start my program in September 2022?

Yes, the Faculty of Engineering is planning to offer all graduate courses in person for Fall 2022. 

Will I be required to provide official/final trancripts before I can register in the program?

You will be required to provide official/final transcripts. Electronic transcript submission is acceptable, however, it must be emailed directly to Western from your institution's Registrar's Office. Transcripts should be emailed to: gradapps@uwo.ca.

MESc/PhD International Students

Can I come to Canada to start a program in September?

What are the quarantine requirements for students arriving in Canada from abroad?

All Western University, Brescia, Huron and King's students arriving from outside of Canada (including international students, permanent residents, and Canadian citizens) are required to plan a 14-day quarantine and must register their travel & quarantine plan on the government's ArriveCan app prior to arrival in Canada. Find all the information on what steps to take before you travel on Western University’s International Arrival page.

Will my program be in-person or online in September?

The Faculty of Engineering is offering all graduate courses in person for Fall 2022. Exceptions may only be considered for students with immigration-related delays. Affected students should contact the Faculty Graduate Office to further discuss (wegraduate@uwo.ca). 

You must also consult with your supervisor if you are not able to arrive at Western in September, and the potential impact this will have on your research activities.

Can I defer my admission to January 2023 due to study permit processing delays?

You must consult with your Supervisor and Graduate Program. A deferral of your program could influence your funding package and/or project availability.  

MESc/PhD Domestic Students (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)

Yes; Western is planning to return to in-person learning.
