Sustainability

Effective March 26, 2020, the Amit Chakma Engineering Building officially received LEED Platinum certification, making it only the third academic building in Canada to achieve that level. Of the 2,600 LEED-certified buildings in Canada, less than 5% are recognized as LEED Platinum.

As a Platinum LEED building, the Amit Chakma Engineering Building itself will be a living laboratory and a showcase for intelligent and sustainable design.

To implement our core value of providing the best student experience at one of the country’s most beautiful campuses, the Amit Chakma Engineering Building features:

  • Locally sourced Canadian maple
  • Limestone quarried from Wiarton, Ontario
  • Regional steel to hold up the two-story cantilevered section of the building

Other green design elements include:

  • Solar panels
  • Grey water recovery
  • Electrochromatic windows

A preference for using local materials will reduce our carbon footprint and also highlight the beauty of these materials for students, faculty, staff and visitors alike.
