Western Engineering receives NSERC funding to support Indigenous youth outreach
Western Engineering has received funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s PromoScience Program to support ongoing STEM outreach with local Indigenous community schools.
The funding will support monthly classroom visits led by Western Engineering Outreach at Aamjiwnaang Kinoomaage Gamig, Sir John Moore Community School, Standing Stone School and Antler River Elementary School. Through hands-on natural science and engineering workshops, the program will engage Kindergarten to Grade 8 students from Aamjiwnaang First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames and Chippewas of the Thames First Nation.
The initiative is designed to build sustained relationships through repeat engagement, while increasing students’ sense of belonging, interest and confidence in natural science and engineering. Workshops will be paired with ready-to-go learning resources for educators, supporting classroom learning beyond each visit.
Over three years, the programming is expected to provide more than 7,000 engagements with Indigenous youth and more than 300 engagements with educators. NSERC’s PromoScience Program supports hands-on, inclusive STEM experiences that inspire young people to explore science and engineering studies and careers.
