Borouge International inspires young minds through STEM at Western's Discovery Summer Camp

This summer, the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park in Sarnia came alive with curiosity and creativity as the Discovery Western Summer Camp, proudly sponsored by Borouge International (formerly NOVA Chemicals), welcomed eager Grade 3 to 5 students for a week of hands-on learning and discovery.

Held from July 13 to 17, 2026, the daytime camp introduced young learners to the exciting world of engineering through screen-free, engaging STEM activities designed to spark imagination and foster problem-solving skills. Campers took part in challenges and projects that encouraged them to think like engineers — from playing an AI-awareness-themed card game to building their own harmonicas to explore the science of vibrations, and blending art and science by constructing origami structures.

The camp was led by a team of Western student instructors — undergraduate students from engineering and other fields — who brought energy, expertise and encouragement to every activity.

A highlight of the week was the active involvement of two Borouge employee volunteers, who brought valuable real-world insight to the camp. Their presence allowed campers to meet and interact with professional engineers from the industry. Volunteers shared their career stories, inspired curiosity and worked side by side with campers during activities, making the experience richer and more personal.

Maxwell Bonaparte, a second-year mechanical engineering student at Western who instructed at the camp, reflected on the week's impact:

"I had a wonderful experience at the Borouge International summer camp in Sarnia. It was amazing to see how engaged the campers were in all the activities and how eager they were to bring their creations home to show their parents. The volunteers from Borouge were very helpful and interesting to talk to and connect with. It was a pleasure to have this week of camp and I hope that the campers were able to make lasting connections with STEM."

Katherine Albion, Executive Director of the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park, added:

"The Research Park was thrilled to host the Discovery Western camp to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators. The hands-on learning opportunities helped spark curiosity, build confidence and showcase exciting possibilities in the fields of engineering and technology. The long-standing partnership between Borouge International and Western Engineering Outreach continues to create meaningful opportunities for young learners to explore STEM in a supportive and inspiring environment. This year's camp was more than a week of activities — it was a chance for campers to discover new passions, build lasting friendships and see the real-world possibilities of a future in engineering.
