NOVA Chemicals inspires young minds through STEM at Western’s Discovery Summer Camp
This summer, the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park in Sarnia once again came alive with curiosity and creativity as the Discovery Western Summer Camp, proudly sponsored by NOVA Chemicals, welcomed eager Grade 3 to 5 students for a week of hands-on learning and discovery.
Held from July 21 to 25, 2025, the daytime camp introduced young learners to the exciting world of engineering through screen-free, engaging STEM activities designed to spark imagination and foster problem-solving skills. Campers took part in challenges and projects that encouraged them to think like engineers — from designing their own lava lamps and creating math-inspired art to building encrypted friendship bracelets, designing water filters and launching catapults. One unique activity had campers exploring how to be informed consumers of AI, blending critical thinking with modern technology awareness.
The camp was led by a dedicated team of three Western student instructors — undergraduate and graduate students from engineering and other fields — who brought energy, expertise, and encouragement to every activity.
A highlight of the week was the active involvement of seven NOVA Chemicals employee volunteers, who collectively contributed 21 hours to the camp. Their presence not only added valuable real-world insight but also allowed campers to meet and interact with professional engineers from a variety of disciplines. Volunteers shared their own career stories, inspired curiosity and worked side-by-side with the campers during activities, making the experience richer and more personal.
Jessica Monaghan, lead instructor, reflected on the week’s impact:
“This is my second year helping to facilitate NOVA camp and I was so excited to return! We had a couple of familiar faces, some new campers and daily volunteers from NOVA, which made this camp week extremely special! My favourite part of the NOVA camp is always seeing kids grow their curiosity: from building their own bridges to creating their own sustainable water filter, no two designs were alike and it always inspires me to see everyone's creativity come to life.”
Western Engineering Outreach Instructor, Fredrick Wielinga, added:
“NOVA Camp provides campers with a fun, hands-on opportunity to explore and learn about engineering while engaging with volunteer professional engineers from a variety of disciplines.”
The long-standing partnership between NOVA Chemicals and Western Engineering Outreach continues to create meaningful opportunities for young learners to explore STEM in a supportive and inspiring environment. The 2025 camp was more than a week of activities — it was a chance for campers to discover new passions, build lasting friendships and see the real-world possibilities of a future in engineering.
