Jerzy Floryan honoured with national award for distinguished service
Jerzy Floryan, professor in the department of mechanical and materials engineering at Western University, has received the Clifford N. Downing Award from the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME).
The award, presented annually, recognizes individuals for “distinguished service to the CSME over many years.” Floryan was honoured during the CSME International Congress banquet held in May in Montréal.
A Fellow of the CSME, Floryan is internationally recognized for his research that sits at the intersection of fluid mechanics and applied mathematics, where he applies modern mathematical methods, algorithms and simulations to analyze engineering problems.
His research has advanced understanding in both theoretical and applied mechanics and he has mentored generations of engineers through his teaching and supervision at Western.
“Professor Floryan has been a prolific academic for many decades,” says Anthony Straatman, professor and chair of the department of mechanical and materials engineering. “He has also been deeply involved in leadership in the engineering faculty and in flagship national and international organizations.”
The Clifford N. Downing Award is one of the CSME’s most prestigious honours, celebrating sustained leadership and volunteerism within the society. Floryan’s service includes editorial roles, conference organization and advocacy for mechanical engineering education and research in Canada.
