Bruce Ross, BESc’85, receives honorary degree
Bruce Ross, BESc’85, received his honorary Doctorate of Laws from Western University at Spring Convocation. Ross is a pioneering business leader in transformative technology and currently serves as group head of technology and operations at RBC.
He is known for expertly translating strategy into business success by adapting and advancing rapid global change in technology.
Ross is also known for his commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism with a particular focus on health, education and mentoring the next generation. He has spearheaded several programs to encourage young people to pursue technology careers.
"I am personally thrilled to be here today to offer this citation for Bruce Ross," said Western Engineering Dean Ken Coley, who spoke at Ross's convocation. "Bruce is an exceptional leader, a passionate innovator and a proud Western alumnus whose remarkable contributions to the world of technology and business have made a lasting impact. I am deeply grateful for all his support and mentorship over my time at Western."
Ross graduated from Western with a Bachelor of Engineering Science in 1985, and since then, as a leader in two iconic companies, IBM and RBC, he has been a driving force behind some of the most significant transformations in the global technology sector.
At RBC, Ross has led the charge on cutting-edge initiatives in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data analytics. And under his leadership, RBC has become one of the world’s top banks for AI maturity, ranking #1 in Canada and #3 globally.
Ross's connection to Western is strong. He has served on the Board of Governors and was a key player in the creation of the RBC Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Project, a partnership worth over $3 million, launched in 2019.
This project has provided immense value to students, fostering cross-disciplinary work in AI and data science that will benefit society for years to come. He was also instrumental in launching RBC’s Amplify Program and the Design Thinking Program at Western, initiatives that give students the skills they need to excel in the rapidly evolving fields of big data and technology.
Ross's generosity doesn’t stop there. He has created opportunities for students through co-op placements and full-time roles, ensuring they are well-prepared to thrive in their careers.
Additionally, he established the RBC Scholarship in Data Science and the RBC Scholarship in Software Engineering, both of which help talented students pursue their dreams. His contributions to scholarships and funding for AI and cybersecurity initiatives reflect his deep commitment to the future of Western and its students.
Ross's career has been one of continuous leadership and innovation, and his work has earned him many accolades, including the L.S. Lauchland Engineering Alumni Medal and the Canadian CIO of the Year award. His dedication to Western, his passion for technology, and his unwavering support of students make him a true trailblazer—one who has shaped industries and inspired future generations.
