Each year, Western Engineering presents a faculty member with the Engineering Award for Excellence in Research to recognize their outstanding research contributions. This year’s recipient is Mechanical and Materials Engineering professor Jun Yang.

“I am pleased, honoured and humbled receiving this award,” said Yang. “This award will encourage me to continue making contributions to our university and the Faculty of Engineering.”

Yang is an established researcher in additive manufacturing, printed electronics and advanced materials. He also played a major role in the successful submission of an Interdisciplinary Development Initiative to develop an Industry 4.0 Network at Western.

Letters of support for Yang’s nomination from colleagues and students touted Yang for his passion, creativity and significant work in the field.

Professor R. Ben Mrad of the University of Toronto noted the high quality of Yang’s numerous research publications in the area of micro/nano-fabrication and photolithography and the great promise of his work related to lab-on-a-chip for blood diagnostics. Lisa Cechetto, Executive Director of Western’s WORLDiscoveries, recognized Jun as being “one of Western’s most prolific inventors. His collaborations have led to more than $300,000 in licensing revenue, which is extraordinary.”

Yang has successfully secured significant funding from numerous provincial and federal funding groups and from industry and abroad. He has authored more than 120 journal articles, five book chapters and numerous conference papers in national and international conferences. Additionally, Yang currently has 24 patents to his credit.

“Jun is extremely enthusiastic and professional in all of his work in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department, the Faculty of Engineering and his dealings with WORLDiscoveries and external partners,” says Mechanical and Materials Engineering professor and department chair Dr. Tony Straatman. “He is innovative, inventive and highly regarded as an expert in his research area.”

Yang will receive the Engineering Award for Excellence in Research at the Western Engineering Faculty and Staff Awards Luncheon on May 22, 2019.
