Manweiler receives honour for her selflessness and 40 years of service

Western Engineering News | June 6, 2016
Excellence, enthusiasm, teamwork and leadership are all qualities the Sharon A. Ling Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement by a Staff Member represents. Katherine Manweiler embodies all of these characteristics, described by her colleagues as being a model employee.
The Sharon A. Ling Award of Excellence is presented annually to a Western Engineering employee who has made outstanding contributions in support of academic, research, innovation, public service or the administrative missions of the Faculty of Engineering.
In 2007, the award was renamed to recognize Sharon Ling, a long-time staff member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Sharon was known for her dedication and enthusiasm, as well as her humour.
Katherine Manweiler is an exceptional choice for this award, and one of the few who can represent the legacy of Sharon, having worked with her for many years.
“It is an honour to receive an award that is in memory of our colleague and friend Sharon Ling,” said Manweiler. “Sharon cared about everyone — especially her students. As noted on her memorial plaque, Sharon touched our lives with grace, humour and love.”
Manweiler is described as reliable, selfless, professional, and knowledgeable. Her knowledge of the University financial policies and procedures is outstanding. She models and contributes to Western’s core values of integrity, respect, and commitment to service.
While many of the nomination letters in support of Manweiler spoke to her vast array of knowledge, skill and her undeniable work ethic, what stood out was her compassion for others.
“Walking into her office, I realize the amount of work she is doing on a daily basis and the high level of traffic she experiences from students, staff and faculty members,” said Ashraf El Damatty, Professor and Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. “What is really impressive is that she does all that with a smile on her face, treating everybody in the faculty with a great deal of respect.”
For Manweiler, this year will mark 40 years of service to the Faculty of Engineering. She will receive the Sharon A. Ling Award of Excellence at the Western Engineering Faculty and Staff Awards Lunch on June 22.
