Graduate Student Recruitment

Elevating “Canada’s best student experience at a research-intensive university” to the next level

The GRC (Geotechnical Research Centre) members invite applications for post-doctoral fellowships, PhD, and MESc research positions.

The main purpose of the Geotechnical Research Centre (GRC) is to conduct geotechnical and related interdisciplinary research with emphasis on interfacing with industry. Western has a strong geotechnical program at both the graduate level. The faculty members forming the Geotechnical Research Centre are investigating a range of challenging geotechnical and geoenvironmental problems.

Graduate studies in geotechnical engineering at Western offer different programs including PhD, MESc and MEng.  Currently, there are 51 graduate students, with 30 in the PhD and 21 in the MESc program, supervised by GRC Research Directors.

PostDoctoral Fellows

The postdoctoral fellowships are for one-year to three-years and involve leading one of a number of existing and upcoming research projects related to the research opportunities identified above. The postdoctoral fellow applicants should have a PhD in a relevant discipline, and relevant publications in highly respected journals in the field are considered an asset.

PhD Graduate Students

Research funding is available for high quality, motivated candidates with relevant degrees, strong academic standing, excellent communication skills, and a keen interest in the research opportunities. Relevant academic, research, or industrial experience in the field is beneficial but not essential.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering (PhD) degree is a thesis-based degree.  PhD students are required to complete eight graduate courses  research thesis. Applicant should have a Masters degree in Engineering, or similar program

Acceptance into the PhD degree program is contingent upon successfully finding a faculty advisor. It is the responsibility of the applicant to find a faculty advisor. Eligible applications will remain in a pending status until such time a faculty advisor is secured by the applicant (for a period of one year from the date of application).

MESc Graduate Students

The Master of Engineering Science (MESc) program is a thesis based Master's research degree. This program is offered to applicants who hold a four-year Bachelors Degree. It is expected that graduate students will complete all program requirements within two years.
