Why did you choose the Structural Engineering w International Development program engineering?

Coming into university, I was unsure of the direction I wanted to take with my engineering degree. During the general first year program, I was introduced to many different things and the freedom to not have to declare until second year allowed me the opportunity to reflect and consolidate my interests. I chose Civil and Environmental Engineering after discovering I had a passion for the field during my first year. I chose Structural with International Development because of my passion for global issues and the ability to travel with the Summer Community Development Placement. I had been selected for the 2020 placement in Cuba before it was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Why Western Engineering?

I really love the camaraderie I feel amongst the students in the faculty. Engineering truly is a team sport, and everyone always helps each other out. I’ve always felt very accepted, and I have always been able to reach out to colleagues, peers and friends for any questions or assistance. It’s wonderful to be part of such an esteemed group whose alumni lead industry and research.

Can you talk about your residence experience?

I lived in residence for two years and I’m very grateful for my experience. My first year I was in Ontario Hall.  I was able to surround myself with likeminded peers in my faculty, as well as being able to forge close friendships which I’ve maintained to this day. I met all five of my current roommates that year and we’ve been friends ever since. Second year I was in Delaware Residence as a Residence Soph.  I introduced incoming students to their new way of living to ease the daunting transition from high school life to university. Throughout that year, I discovered a lot about my school, my community, and my faculty,  and I was able to pass on my passion and to promote a sense of belonging to the campus for my frosh. It was a fun and educational experience and I loved the location of Delaware as it was a closer proximity experience for me than O Hall.

Why did you choose to participate in Orientation Week as a Western Engineering Soph?

Volunteering in Orientation Week as a Western Engineering Soph was a very fulfilling experience for me. I’ve always loved working with others, and during OWeek I was presented with the opportunity to act as a role model, to work collaboratively with other student leaders, and to enhance my problem-solving skills to approach difficult situations. It was such a pleasure to guide new first year students throughout the beginning of their academic transition to post-secondary and I’m excited to experience the role as it transitions to full year peer support.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I look up to my parents. Both rose through hardship and difficult childhoods to achieve success in their lives, personally and professionally. I’ve learned the value of dedication, integrity and personal resilience by observing them, and by listening to their stories about their pasts as they grew through the chapters of their lives. In difficult moments, or moments of decision, I find inspiration whenever I think of my mom and dad. They are two of the strongest people I’ve ever known, and I hope to develop the same character and success that they have.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to play sports and video games. I also enjoy reading and watching programs about international, national and local history.  Currently, I play intramural ice hockey, and ultimate frisbee in Western Intramurals with my friends. I have a long history of playing hockey and was also a referee for various city and house leagues through my teens.  Last year I refereed Western Intramural hockey, but this year, I decided to pursue my first love of playing instead of refereeing.  I also played baseball for many years, primarily as a back catcher and centerfielder.  For video games, I like to play Overwatch, Hearthstone and League when I have some alone time. I have developed good relationships through my video games and it’s a good time to enjoy the games, while also connecting with friends.
