April 25, 2025:  Sustainability, Food and AI Conference (9:00am-5:00pm)

Held at the The Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR), this Conference brings together key researchers and business leaders in the agri-food sector to explore opportunities in addressing sustainability challenges through innovation with AI and open source collaboration for a sustainable food system. The conference will include a tour of Western Innovation for Renewable Energy Deployment (WIRED), and a keynote by Dr. Aimee van Wynsberghe. April 2, 2025: IE Sudent News - 2024-25 Western Engineering Competition (November 8-10, 2024)

Haida spoke on the complex portfolios she has held in her professional roles as an Integrated Engineering alum. Her insights explain the unique strengths of the IE training in one's early-stage career, and the strengths that become more obvious in later stages of one's career in Engineering. 

John shared his journey of unexpected discoveries and situations requiring resilience. His insights will encourage you to stay open in your Engineering Education journey, reflect on the value of your experiences and articulate the meaning behind the decisions you make in each step.

February 13, 2025: First Year Discipline Fair

Our second-year and third-year Integrated Engineering students engaged with the first year students who visited the IE table, to learn more about our program as they prepare for their Intent-to-Register (ITR) submissions. It was a busy hour, and we really enjoyed the thoughtful questions from the first year students, and the conversations we had. Thank you volunteers! January 22, 2025: Integrated Engineering Club (IEC) Event - Toyota Tour (Cambridge, ON)

The IEC team, including the IEC execs and Faculty Advisor (Prof. Laurie Lockington-Wong), organized and delivered a success visit to Toyota Cambridge for an exciting, insightful tour! Many first- and second-year students benefitted from this event, and were able to connect with upper year Integrated Engineering students and faculty.

January 9, 2025: Thompson Fellow Special Lecture on Applied Ethics of AI (12:30pm-1:30pm, SEB2099)

Robot ethicist and Western alumna, Dr. Aimee van Wynsberghe, is the Alexander von Humboldt Professor for Applied Ethics of AI, the Director of the Institute for Science and Ethics, and will be visiting from the University of Bonn, Germany. She played an important role as part of the European Commission High Level Expert Group on AI.

Dr. van Wynsberghe will address some fascinating topics:

  • Trustworthy AI, founded on human rights
  • Value-centred design (VSD) and testing
  • Care-centred ethics
  • Attentiveness, reciprocity, privacy, security
  • EU AI Act - risk-based, now ratified, in progress of being enacted
  • OECD - big tech principles
  • Canadian Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA)
