Awards

John M Thompson Award in Engineering Leadership & Innovation

  • Awarded annually to undergraduate students in third or fourth year of a BESc degree program who are registered in the Engineering Leadership and Innovation Certificate and have completed at least two of the required 3000- or 4000-level Certificate courses. A student registered in the Integrated Engineering program (all options) who has completed at least two of the required 3000- or 4000-level Certificate Courses shall also be eligible for this award. Preference will be given to candidates who are not in a BESc/HBA dual degree. Candidates shall not receive more than one John M. Thompson Award in Engineering Leadership and Innovation. Applicants who have received the John M. Thompson HBA/BESc Scholarship shall not be eligible for the John M. Thompson Award in Engineering Leadership and Innovation. The recipients shall be determined on academic achievement in the Certificate and BESc courses and on the demonstration of the integration of business and engineering perspectives through leadership and innovation in extracurricular activities. Applications can be obtained online through the Engineering Undergraduate Services website and must be submitted with a one-page statement that describes the applicant’s relevant extracurricular activities by January 15. The Undergraduate Awards Committee in the Faculty of Engineering, in consultation with the John M. Thompson Chair in Leadership and Innovation, will select the recipients.

Entrepreneurial Spirit Award 

  • Awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering who demonstrate passion, persistence, and achievement in developing an innovative or entrepreneurial idea with engineering principles. 

 

  • Candidates must describe their idea and their plans for its continued development, including how the funds will be used to advance the idea. See HERE for more details. Number of awards will vary, with up to $2000 available annually. 

 

 

John M Thompson HBA/BESc Scholarship 

  • Awarded annually to undergraduate students entering the fourth year of the [five-year] dual degree HBA/BESc program with the highest overall average of courses taken in HBA 1 and Engineering 1, plus Business 2257. 

 

  • Students selected to receive another scholarship valued at $5,000 or more annually that is specific to students in the dual degree HBA/BESc program, are not eligible for this scholarship. 

 

  • This scholarship was established with a generous gift from John M. Thompson (BESc ’66. LLD ’94) and Melinda Thompson (BA ’64 Huron).
