Why Western Engineering?

When deciding where to go, I thought academics would be the most important factor. Then I realized every engineering program teaches the technical skills you need, what really sets them apart is the community. Engineering is often seen as cold and competitive, but that couldn't be further from the truth at Western. Students and staff are always willing to help and support one another, even if you've never met before, and that's what made Western feel like home.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy playing badminton with my family whenever we get the chance. I also like going on picnics with my friends, where we'll usually spend the afternoon painting or doing arts and crafts together. Reading fantasy and Greek mythology novels is another one of my favourite ways to relax after a long week.

Can you talk about your extracurricular activities at Western? Why would you encourage students to get involved?

I joined Steel Bridge, where I explored a new design software and learned engineering concepts from upper-year students that I wouldn't have otherwise until second or third year. I also attended WSCE events to learn more about Civil Engineering, where I met amazing people and found a supportive community. I encourage every student to get involved because it's a great way to learn beyond the classroom, explore your interests, and connect with students who've been in your shoes.

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

I wanted to study Civil Engineering long before coming to Western. I've always loved designing and building things, and I was fascinated by the details behind every bridge, building, or structure that caught my attention. Even when I played with building blocks as a kid, I wanted every design to be well thought out and practical, with a purpose behind it. After attending WSCE events and meeting upper-year students, I became even more confident that Civil Engineering was the right fit for me.

What is your favourite book, movie, or TV show?

My favourite book is The Invention of Hugo Cabret. It was the first novel I ever read, and it's a story I still come back to from time to time. I admired Hugo's determination and curiosity throughout the story, and I loved its message that everything has a purpose. The illustrations made it easy to imagine myself as part of the story, and it sparked my love of reading.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I look up to my mom and my sister. They both work incredibly hard and never stop learning or finding ways to grow. No matter what path I've chosen, they've always supported me and encouraged me to pursue every opportunity that comes my way. They instilled in me the values of kindness, respect, and patience, and continue to inspire me every day.
