Q&A with Samuel Sharif

Through clubs, I have met some of my closest friends, made several industry connections, and travelled around Canada and the US. I would encourage future students to join as many clubs as possible, as they are a great way to learn more about different industries and get hands-on experience.

Why Western Engineering?
Western Engineering offers a uniquely collaborative and supportive environment where students are encouraged to grow both in their academics and in their personal lives. With hands-on opportunities like design teams, the strong sense of community the faculty offers, and the innovative spaces on campus such as ACEB, Western furthers real-world learning, meaningful connections, and lasting impact — all of which make it the perfect place to pursue my engineering journey.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy listening to music, going to the gym, and hiking local trails. These activities help me recharge and maintain balance. I also love reading, especially self-help and non-fiction books, which inspire personal growth and broaden my perspective. Together, these interests keep me energized, curious, and motivated to embrace new challenges.
What was your orientation week experience like as a first-year student?
Orientation week was an exciting and welcoming experience that made me feel instantly connected to the Western Engineering community. Meeting new people, discovering clubs and design teams, and exploring campus resources inspired me to give back by becoming a Charity Soph for this year’s orientation. I want to help new students feel supported and excited about their journey, just like I did during my first week.
Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?
I chose software engineering because I grew up surrounded by video games, which sparked my natural interest in computers and programming. This early exposure inspired me to explore how software shapes technology and everyday life. I’m excited to discover the many facets of software engineering and its vast potential to create innovative solutions across different fields. It’s a constantly evolving area that perfectly matches my curiosity and passion for problem-solving.
What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?
My favorite TV show is Friends because its comedic relief brings calm and humor. Beyond the laughs, it offers a realistic and relatable portrayal of healthy friendships, showing support, growth, and the ups and downs of close relationships. Watching it reminds me of the importance of connection and balance, both in life and in the collaborative environment I value at Western Engineering.
Who do you look up to/admire and why?
I admire people who show resilience and kindness, especially those who use their skills to help others. I look up to mentors and leaders who listen actively and support their communities, inspiring growth and collaboration. Their ability to stay empathetic while driving positive change motivates me to develop both my technical skills and my character as I pursue engineering and leadership opportunities.
