Q&A with Samuel Sharif

Through clubs, I have met some of my closest friends, made several industry connections, and travelled around Canada and the US. I would encourage future students to join as many clubs as possible, as they are a great way to learn more about different industries and get hands-on experience.

Why Western Engineering?

Western Engineering stood out to me because of its collaborative, community-focused environment. Beyond the classroom, there are countless ways to get involved through design teams, competitions like the Western Engineering Competition, clubs, and leadership opportunities. I've come to appreciate that engineering here isn't just about academics; it's about applying what you learn, working with others, and growing through experiences that prepare you well beyond university.

What do you do in your spare time?

Outside of school, I enjoy going to the gym, listening to music, hiking, and reading non-fiction books. Reading helps me continue learning while focusing on personal growth. Through engineering, I've realized how important it is to maintain interests beyond coursework. Making time for those hobbies helps me recharge, stay motivated, and maintain a healthy balance, allowing me to return to my studies with a clearer mindset.

Can you talk about your extracurricular activities at Western?

Over the past few years, I've stayed involved through the Western Engineering Autopilot Club, Habitat for Humanity as Marketing Director, the Western Gazette, intramural volleyball and flag football, and as a Charity Soph. I'd encourage every student to get involved because university is what you make of it. These experiences build friendships, develop skills beyond the classroom, and make your time at Western far more rewarding.

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

I chose Software Engineering because growing up around technology and video games sparked my interest in computers and programming. Since then, I've discovered how broad the field really is. From AI and cybersecurity to cloud computing and mobile development, there are countless paths to explore. I enjoy that there's always something new to learn and the opportunity to build skills that can make an impact across many different industries.

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

One of my favourite recent movies is The Odyssey. I enjoyed how it brings such an influential story to life while staying connected to its historical roots. Beyond the adventure, it explores themes of perseverance, identity, leadership, and home. It reminded me that storytelling isn't just entertainment. It helps us understand different perspectives, cultures, and the experiences that shape people throughout history.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I admire people who are driven to pursue their goals while remaining humble throughout the journey. The people I respect most take initiative, embrace challenges, and actively create opportunities for themselves, but they're also willing to support and mentor others along the way. That balance of ambition, resilience, and kindness is something I strive to reflect in my own academics, leadership, and everyday interactions.
