Q&A with Pranav Joshi

To me, success means feeling fulfilled by whatever I’m doing, which also means finding success in the little things.

Why Western Engineering?

I chose Western Engineering because of the flexibility and customization Western’s program offers its engineering students. For example, engineering students at Western can study combined and concurrent degrees in several different fields alongside their main program. For me, this allows me to do a combined degree in electrical engineering and artificial intelligence systems engineering, combining my interests in artificial intelligence as well as electrical systems.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love history, I’ll watch documentaries whenever I can and am always willing to visit a museum. Outside of that, I enjoy listening to music, movies, and of course, the occasional doomscroll.

What was your orientation week experience like as a first-year student?

I remember the excitement of moving in and attending the engineering program orientation events. You get to learn about the program and the different opportunities and resources available to students, and the Soph team was always happy to provide pointers and advice to first years. I unfortunately then proceeded to contract Covid and self-isolate for the remainder of the events.

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

I couldn’t decide between electrical and software engineering. I knew going into Western that I wanted to do electrical because of my interest in power systems and renewable energy. However, over the course of first year, I found myself enjoying programming a lot and became particularly interested in machine learning. Pursuing an electrical engineering and AISE combined degree was the best way for me to combine both of my interests.

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

My favourite show is The Good Place. It does a great job at breaking down concepts in philosophy into more digestible forms while still managing to stay engaging and funny.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I look up to Abraham Lincoln because of his persistence in the face of adversity. He taught himself to practice law despite limited schooling and despite facing numerous hardships, such as losing his son and political turmoil, he was able to continue to fulfill his responsibilities, which is a level of work ethic I aspire to have.
