Q&A with Nicole Petrou

As someone who has always had a curious mind, I love how diverse engineering is. The sector is incredibly broad, and an engineering degree can often open doors to various other industries.

Why Western Engineering?

I always heard so much about the community at western, especially in the engineering program and I knew that I would need a support system throughout my time in university. I’m very lucky to have found just that.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love to read books and watch movies. I really love any type of fantasy book like Harry Potter, Mortal Instruments, and I recently started reading Throne of Glass. I love all kinds of movies, but I tend to gravitate towards sci-fi like Dune.

Can you talk about your extracurricular activities at Western?

So far, I’ve been a student ambassador and a big sister for the women in engineering club. I’ve found that I really enjoy talking and connecting with people, as well as sharing my knowledge about the program and the community at Western. I would encourage all students to get involved at Western because there are so many great opportunities to meet amazing people and get great experience..

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

I choose electrical engineering because I have anyways loved circuits and magnetic fields in high school and throughout first year, so it felt like the most fitting one. It is also an interest of mine work with hardware technology.

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

My favourite book is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, my favourite movie is Dead Poets Society, and my favourite TV show would be probably The Office or Arrested Development.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I have always admired my sister. I have always admired her because she is very smart, she is a Western alumni actually, and she never took the easy way out and she proved to me that I can do hard things, even if I really, really don’t want to.
