Why Western Engineering?

Western Engineering’s community is truly unmatched to other programs. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I was welcomed into the supportive (and slightly odd) community here. Whether it was upper-year students offering guidance or classmates helping each other through calc II, I never found myself alone. Another aspect of the program that stood out was the unique opportunity to pursue a dual degree, allowing curious students like myself to open hundreds of doors for a future career path.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, you can find me doing anything to stay busy. A basic answer, but I love spending time with my friends and family, and I drag them along with me wherever I go. Recently, I’ve been into trying new restaurants (I’m always down to hear a food recommendation), playing Imposter, or late night drives. I also love anything fashion and am always looking for ways to expand my collection, so I’m usually at the mall or a thrift store when I have the time!

Can you talk about your extracurricular activities at Western?

Being a part of extracurricular activities has been one of the best decisions I have made at Western, and I would 100% recommend joining a club or intramural. In my first year, I was a Marketing Ambassador for Women in Engineering, along with VP of Marketing for the Western Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship Club where I focused on social media outreach. This year, I am VP of Development for the Pre-Business Students’ Network, where I connect Western students to various industries through case competitions. I would encourage all students to get involved in extracurriculars, as they are a great way to take your mind off school while building meaningful connections at Western. First year can feel crazy, but I promise finding the time and putting your energy towards one non-academic activity can make all the difference :)

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

I chose Integrated Engineering because it provides me with the opportunity to explore various engineering disciplines while learning how to combine technical engineering skills with entrepreneurship and leadership. Since I also plan to pursue a dual degree with Ivey, I found that Integrated Engineering opens many doors for the future, including opportunities such as project management, tech, consulting, and other fields that combine both engineering and business. For anyone who is unsure whether they want to pursue a traditional engineering path, I would definitely recommend looking into Integrated Engineering!

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

As kids, I think most of us have many favourite pieces of media that we eventually grow out of — emphasis on the “most”. My favourite movie today, as well as 15 years ago, is Cars 2. This movie never gets old to me, and while I wish I had a deeper explanation for why it is my favourite, I genuinely just love the characters and plot of the movie. I also have a very passionate ranking of all three Cars movies, but it's probably better for me not to get into that.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

The person I look up to most is my Grandma. She immigrated to Canada alone from the Philippines when she was 26, leaving behind everything familiar to build a new life. Over the past 60 years, she has built a successful career as a social worker, raised a loving family, and created a life she can be proud of. However, while these are the accomplishments the outside world sees, I admire her most for the values she has carried through every stage of her life: integrity, grit, and compassion. She is the person who raised me with these values and showed me that true success is not only about what you achieve, but the positive impact you have on others.
