Why Western Engineering?

I chose Western Engineering because of the strong sense of community. I wanted to study somewhere I’d feel supported, included, and connected to my peers. From the start, Western stood out as a faculty where people genuinely care about one another, and where traditions, mentorship, and collaboration make it feel like more than just a program.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my free time I love reading, listening to music, watching movies, and spending time outdoors hiking or camping. I also enjoy traveling when I get the chance. On campus, I stay involved through clubs like Engineering Without Borders, where I help with community-focused projects, and through sustainability initiatives that let me support causes I care about.

What was your orientation week experience like as a first-year student?

As a first-year, I was the only woman in my engineering faculty group of 11. At first this felt intimidating, but my faculty Soph, a fourth-year female civil engineering student, made me feel supported and encouraged. Her leadership and advice made O-Week welcoming and positive. It was great to immediately feel part of the Western Engineering community and see how close-knit and supportive it really is.

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

I loved chemistry in high school and was drawn to the versatility of chemical engineering. I liked that the degree could lead to careers in many industries. The many applications of chem eng, especially in environmental and biological fields, aligned with my interests and values, which made me feel like it was the right path for me.

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

My favourite TV show is Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Originally a one-woman play, it has witty, relatable characters, and fourth-wall breaks that let you into the main character’s inner thoughts. Fleabag (the main character) is deeply flawed, messy, and sometimes unlikeable, but her honesty and struggle to grow and love through grief, modern social dynamics, and familial issues, make her incredibly real.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I look up to my father the most. He has always shown a strong work ethic, whether in school, his career, or building our family cabin. As I’ve followed a similar education and career path with engineering, I’ve realized how truly smart and knowledgeable he is. He faced challenges without the example that he has set for me, and his sacrifices for our family inspire me.
