We have mutiple PhD positions and we are currently looking for self-motivated and enthusiastic students with the following research backgrounds: 

  • Micromechanics of deformation in polycrystals, e.g., metals and alloys or ceramics.  
  • Neutron irradiation effects on metal alloys and ceramics. 
  • Solid mechanics and finite element modeling of materials.
  • Crystal plasticity.
  • Diffraction and imaging experimental techniques. 
Applicants with a bachelors or masters degree in mechanical or materials engineering are encouraged to contact Hamid Abdolvand.  
Prospective candidates will be assessed based on how well they meet the following criteria:
  • Excellent degree in their relevant discipline;

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills- Western's minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international students is 86 with no individual score below 20. Click here for more information.

The following skills are desirable:
  • Ability to work with finite element packages, eg, ABAQUS.
  • Ability to conduct experiments using SEM, EBSD, TEM, and XRD.
  • Ability to program in any of the following languages:Fortran, Matlab, or Python.
  • Abilitiy to develop or work with user materials subroutines.
