Space Workshops

This Spring and Fall 2023, Western Engineering Outreach is excited to offer a suite of coding workshops to raise awareness of the relevance and importance of space!

Space workshops are FREE for Spring and Fall 2023. These workshops were developed and generously offered through the Canadian Space Agency Grants for Space STEM Initiatives for Youth - Space Awareness Element. You can learn more about the project here.

Available Workshops

The following curriculum connections can support you in choosing a workshop to request. All workshops are designed to support student exploration of coding and engineering and can provide a relatable context (space!) for coding.

See How We Fall: Gravity Simulations: Students will explore how gravity differs between planets by researching and coding a falling planet gravity simulation on Cospaces.
Grade 5 (science): Forces Acting on Structures and Mechanisms
Grade 6 (science): Space
Grade 7 (math): Data & Digital Literacy
Grade 8 (math): Data & Digital Literacy

LEGO: Activate Communications: Students will design, build, and program a LEGO robot to solve problems in space, including navigating to a satellite dish and pushing it fully upright.
Grade 5 (science): Forces Acting on Structures and Mechanisms
Grade 6 (science): Space
Grade 7 (math): Data & Digital Literacy
Grade 8 (math): Data & Digital Literacy

Let's Rock: Teaching Machine AI and Lunar Rocks: Students will be introduced to the concepts of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural networks. Using a data set of Earth and lunar rocks, they will teach a machine to differentiate between the two.
Grade 6 (science): Space
Grade 7 (math): Data & Digital Literacy
Grade 8 (math): Data & Digital Literacy

Microbit Rovers in Space: You've met the Micro:bit, now meet the rover! Students will build and code rovers to use line tracking technology, object avoidance, and addressable LEDs to complete challenges.
Grade 10-12: Computer Studies
Grade 9 (science): Earth and Space Science, Space Exploration
Grade 12 (science: Earth and Space Science

Mind of an Astronaut: Develop an Artificial Intelligence App: Students will be introduced to the concepts of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural networks. They will investigate how machine learning can be utilized in space and code their own app to support the mental wellness of astronauts.
Grade 10-12: Computer Studies
Grade 9-12: Health
Grade 12: Earth and Space Science
