How do international students apply for co-op?

International students, protected persons or refugee claimant students completing an engineering co-op in Canada
are required to hold a valid study permit that includes on-campus work authorization conditions printed on it.

The process is outlined below:

Step 1: Complete the Co-op Application Form to Acknowledge Requirements 

  • While completing step#2 of the application process, the student will be required to review the acknowledgement letter provided and formally review and accept all the terms and conditions outlined within the document. Before applying, if the student has questions regarding co-op program eligibility, they can email wecareer@uwo.ca , and for questions around study permit conditions, they are invited to email iss@uwo.ca.

Step 2: Co-op Secured

  • Before starting the co-op term, the student must present the physical copy of their study permit to Engineering Career Services by coming to SEB 2092 between Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm to have their document reviewed to ensure the conditions on the study permit are present, and the expiry date covers the entire work term length.
  • If approved, the student will be emailed a formal letter from the career services team to present to their respective employer contact along with their study permit.

Step 3: Co-op Ending

  • At the end of the co-op placement, the career services team will email the student yet another placement letter for their own records, concluding the work term.

What happens if an international student does not hold a study permit with the on-campus work authorization?

In the event a student does not hold a study permit with the on-campus work authorization, but is eligible for co-op, they will be advised to connect to Western International for further support before a letter from the faculty can be provided. 

  • Students can book an appointment or drop in to meet with one of the International Student Advisors.
  • Students can also email Western International for any immigration-related queries at iss@uwo.ca.
