Intraoperative Measurement Systems
We are developing systems that will be used in the operating room to enhance alignment and soft tissue balance during joint replacement surgery. A major project is an instrumented knee implant that measures the relative load distribution between the medial and lateral sides of the joint. This is used during trial knee extension and flexion, providing the surgical team with a real-time display of knee loads. Additional balancing if required, can then be done while load is monitored.
The relative load distribution between the medial and lateral side of the knee can be measured intra-operatively using an instrumented trial implant.

We are also working on systems that will permit measurement of joint position to assist in the alignment of implants for hip, knee, elbow, and wrist replacement.
