Why Design Thinking

Two students working together on design project.

Design thinking is a human-centred process for creatively working through problems.

In the RBC Design Thinking Program, participants will learn the key stages of design thinking, and tools and mindsets that will help students apply their knowledge to real-world problems, and develop creative solutions.

Design thinking is inherently interdisciplinary and requires collaboration among people with different mindsets and skills. The RBC Design Thinking Program will benefit students who are interested in further developing their creativity, storytelling, teamwork, problem-solving, and coding skills in order to become better equipped to innovate.

Just as design thinking practices reflect a diverse set of tools from multiple disciplines, design thinking allows for a diverse set of uses – creating products, services, and experiences, and fostering frameworks for organizational change. Although the use cases are diverse, at the centre of design thinking is human-centred work that seeks to serve people and create better and more meaningful ways to live. Understanding human needs is a core part of design thinking, and empathy is a key way that design thinkers come to know how and why to design for others.
