  • Solar/Kinetic Eco-battery

From electricity generated by pedal power, to water purification techniques, to more energy efficient heating and cooling methods, first year Western Engineering students had no shortage of ideas at the ES 050 Design Showcase, where this year's theme was to design an environmentally-friendly system or device.

The annual event is the culmination of a year’s work in the introductory design course ES 050. This year the judges awarded two teams top marks, which left them tied for first place. Congratulations go out to the two top teams. From studio 009, Daniel Araujo, Jason Becker, Nathan Galt, Kevin Luzak and Clement Yung, won for their solar/kinetic battery for home electronics (read about team Eco-Battery's design). From studio 003, Daniel Belisle, Malini Jhaver, Raphael Kopala and Christopher Lammers also placed in first for their “Power Walk” project (read about team Power Walk's design). Studio 009 is taught by Dr. Ken McIsaac, and studio 003 is taught by Dr. Sohrab Rohani.

Coming in third place was Jonathon Chan, Michael Chan, Benjamin Collacott and Steven Disley for their work on “Smart Solutions, Inc.” They are from studio 010, taught by Dr. Paul Kurowski.

Throughout the course of the event, guests and participants were also asked to vote for their favourite entries. The team that picked up the most votes from the public consisted of Hussein Abusheda, Neil Balan, Mohamed Mousa and Mohamed Murad from studio 009.   They designed a fuel cell for home electronics.

This year Western Engineering welcomed several special guests as speakers to the Design Showcase. On-hand to lend their support were London Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best, University President Paul Davenport, and PEO representative Manoj Choudhary. Acting Dean George Knopf and Professor Paul Kurowski also congratulated the students on their hard work this year.

Congratulations to all the first year students who worked so hard this year in ES 050.
