G. S. Peter Castle

G.S.P. Castle, P. Eng., LFIEEE is currently Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Research Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada. He earned his B.E.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario in 1961 and M.Sc. (Eng) and DIC from Imperial College, University of London in 1963. From 1963 to 1966 he was employed at the Research and Development Laboratories, Northern Electric Company, Ottawa, ON, returning to the University of Western Ontario in 1966 as a Research Assistant in the Applied Electrostatics Laboratory. In 1969 he became the first student to be awarded a Ph.D. from Engineering Science at Western. He was appointed as a member of Faculty in 1968 and, since then, has served in a number of capacities including a term as Assistant Dean and two terms as Department Chair. He retired in 2004 but is still active in research and graduate student supervision.

Dr. Castle has taught courses in electric circuits, electromagnetic theory, power systems and electrical energy conversion. He developed and for over 33 years taught a unique final year elective course in direct energy conversion dealing with the broader issues of energy utilization and conservation. His research interests have centered upon the industrial application of electrostatic forces and he is one of the founding members of the Applied Electrostatics Research Centre. This Centre is one of the few in the world specializing in the application of electrostatics to interdisciplinary problems. As a result he has undertaken projects of significant importance to industry including: manufacturing (electrostatic painting), the environment (air and water pollution control), agriculture (electrostatic crop spraying), copying and printing (electrophotography), recycling (plastics separation) and electrostatic coating (coated abrasives). This work has resulted in over 200 Journal and referred Conference publications, 50 Industrial Reports and 9 patents. Dr Castle has been an invited plenary lecturer at many international meetings on Electrostatics and has received numerous awards including Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Faculty of Engineering Award for Excellence in Research in 2003, and the L.S. Lauchland Engineering Alumni Medal in 2004 at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Castle received the Richard Harold Kaufmann Award from the Industry Applications Society of the IEEE in Oct. 2016 for his contributions to Industry.
