Western Engineering student Daniel Hammond plans to spend a couple of weeks in Antarctica - in February. Hammond is one of 70 students worldwide travelling to Antarctica to take part in the International Polar Year Antarctic University Expedition. (more)

  • ECE graduate student receives an NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship with Research In Motion
    Adam Love, Electrical Engineering MESc student supervised by Dr. Vijay Parsa, has received an NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship with Research In Motion, Waterloo, Ontario. (more)

  • CBE students place 1st at National SNC-Lavalin Plant Design Competition
    One of Western Engineering’s 2007 Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Capstone Design teams, consisting of Suanne Mahabir, Karen Lenkiewicz and Luke McIntyre, attended this year’s competition and won first place for their presentation, Manufacture of Polylactic Acid, biodegradable plastic from renewable sources.   • CBE graduate student, Mustafa El-Sabawi, wins big at CSChE Conference
    Mustafa El-Sabawi, Chemical Engineering PhD student who is supervised by Dr. Hugo deLasa, was the winner of this year’s 2008 CSChE Conference Best Graduate Student Paper-Poster Presentation held in Ottawa this October. (more)

  • Globe ranks Western #1 for seventh year
    The University of Western Ontario has received Canada’s only ‘A’ grade for overall student satisfaction among its 16 Canadian peer universities (large – more than 22,000 students). This is the seventh year in a row Western has come out on top among large Canadian universities. (more)

  • Fast Pyrolisis Research at the Bioindustrial Innovation Centres - article from Report On Industry Magazine, by Western Engineering alum Katherine Albion, PhD

    Research is underway to develop pyrolysis technology for the conversion of agricultural waste into fuels and valuable products. Pyrolysis produces bio-oil that can be shipped to a biorefinery for refining into green chemicals and biofuels. Fast pyrolysis research is currently conducted by the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR) research group at The University of Western Ontario and is soon to begin at the Bioindustrial Innovation Centre (BIC) at the Research Park, Sarnia-Lambton Campus.     Making a Difference

  • Mobile water treatment hope for remote areas
    From the most remote villages of Africa, to First Nations communities of northern Ontario, the need for access to safe drinking water is an urgent matter. The scarcity of energy or major infrastructure challenges can also make it difficult to get safe drinking water to these communities. (more)

  • Sarah Gaetan joins the Deans Office as Coordinator, Faculty & Staff Relations
    Effective October 6, Sarah Gaetan joined the Dean’s Office on a secondment as the Coordinator, Faculty & Staff Relations. As many of you know, Sarah has been working in the Undergraduate Services office for the past two years providing support to the Associate Dean, Academic.

  • Isobel Nicholson joins the Undergraduate Services Office as the Undergraduate Assistant
    Effective October 16, Isobel Nicholson will fill the position of Undergraduate Assistant in the Undergraduate Services Office while Sarah Gaetan is on her secondment in the Deans Office. Isobel has a great deal of administrative experience which she will bring to this position. She comes to us from Derby Staffing Solutions where she has recently worked in a variety of temporary administrative positions for Express Personnel, General Dynamics Land Systems, and The Peoplebank to name a few. She has also worked for The University of Western Ontario as an Assistant to the Dean and Administrative Officer for the Faculty of Information and Media Studies.

  • Western's new chancellor installed
    The University of Western Ontario's 20th chancellor, John Thompson, was installed Friday during the afternoon fall convocation ceremony. Thompson, a Western Engineering alumnus and chairman of the Board of TD Bank, will be serving a four-year term through 2012. (more)
