Dunning, Straatman receive top teaching awards

Second-year Mechanical and Materials Engineering students point out their professors Cynthia Dunning and Tony Straatman, Western's most recent recipients of Teaching Excellence Awards.

Mechanical and Materials Engineering professors Tony Straatman and Cynthia Dunning received two of Western's top teaching awards:
Edward G. Pleva Award for Excellence in Teaching - ANTHONY STRAATMAN
Marilyn Robinson Award for Excellence in Teaching – CYNTHIA DUNNING

  • Pencilla Lang places first at Canadian Engineering Competition
    Third-year Mechanical and Materials Engineering student Pencilla Lang recently placed first in the communications category at the Canadian Engineering Competition in Saskatoon. (more)

  • Chemical Engineering grads win 2006 INTELLIGEN Inc. Process Design Competition
    Milana Trifkovic and Sandra Cardoso, both recent graduates from Western's Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, won first place in the 2006 INTELLIGEN Inc. Process Design Competition for their project entitled: “Simulation of Process for Manufacturing of Clopidogrel Bisulfate with SuperPro Designer Software Package.”(more)

  • Erin Cullen selected for the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation Inco Limited Masters Engineering Scholarship
    Erin Cullen, a Western Masters student in Civil Engineering, has been selected for the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation Inco Limited Masters Engineering Scholarship. Erin will receive a $10,000 scholarship plus a summer job opportunity with Inco Limited, either following first year of a two year program or immediately following graduation. (more)

  • Luiz Capretz among the most downloaded articles
    The article, Managing the business of software product line: An empirical investigation of key business factors, written by Electrical and Computer Engineering professor, Luiz Capretz, and Western Engineering graduate student, Faheem Ahmed, is ranked at number 18 of the top 25 most downloaded articles appearing in the Information and Software Technology Journal.   • Hangan visits the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) part of the National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL)
    During a recent visit to the NWTC, Civil and Environmental Engineering professor Horia Hangan gave two talks regarding wind energy:
    (1) Wind Energy Mapping in Complex Topographic Terrain.
    (2) The wake and vortex shedding control for Diverging Trailing Edge (DTE) airfoils

    Both talks were well attended and followed by interesting discussions. Future collaborations were discussed between Western and NWTC.

  • Slobodan back from Indian Institute of Science
    Civil and Environmental Engineering professor Slobodan P. Simonovic traveled to India March 8 to present an Institute Lecture at the Indian Institute of Science. The lecture was chaired by the Director of the Institute.

    The Indian Institute of Science is the highest research organization in the country in field of natural sciences and engineering. After the lecture, Slobodan participated in the International workshop on “Water Resources Management in a Changing World.” 

  • Canadian Construction Association present the Person of the Year Award to Western Engineering alum, John Westeinde
    Mr. John Westeinde, BESc '62 has been named the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) Person of the Year. The CCA Person of the Year award is intended to honour one individual in the Canadian construction industry who has exemplified leadership and excellence within the industry and in community life. It is considered the highest honour that CCA can bestow upon one individual. (more)

  • Chemical Engineering students receive awards at Undergraduate Nanotechnology Conference
    Third-year Biochemical Engineering student, Suanne Mahabir, and fourth-year Biochemical Engineering student, Christine Oates, attended the University of Toronto Undergraduate Nanotechnology Conference at the Mars Center in Toronto.

    At the conference, Mahabir and Oates participated in the poster competition. Both did very well and were recognized in the award presentation ceremony. In particular, Mahabir did extremely well, capturing the first place award of the conference.

  • Banner year for Western Engineering research
    At the March 29, 2007 Faculty Council, Hesham El Naggar, Western Engineering's Associate Dean Research & External Relations, presented Western Engineering's research successes for 2006/07. Referring to the past year as a "banner year," El Naggar says the entire Faculty should be proud of our researchers accomplishments. Click here to see the list presented at Faculty Council.

  • Western Engineering welcomes Brigitte Heddle
    Brigitte Heddle joined the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering as the Undergraduate Affairs Assistant. She will be filling in for Rachel Dekker who will be away until the end of August. Brigitte is no stranger to the University campus. She joins Western Engineering from Sports and Recreation Services where she held a term contract as an administrative assistant. Prior to that, she worked in the President’s Office on a temporary basis. Brigitte received her Business Diploma in Denmark and her Co-Op Accounting Business Diploma from Georgian College of Applied Arts & Technology.

  • New position for Mike Gaylard
    Effective April 1, Mike has accepted the promotion to fulltime Facilities Manager. This is a position within the Dean’s Office. Mike will be responsible for looking after day-to-day building management, overseeing issues work on planning in terms of capital projects, liaising with Physical Plant often serving as conduit between faculty and staff stakeholders and PPD, overseeing OH&S for the Faculty and liaising with The University’s OH&S unit, and much more. Mike is now part of the administrative management team.

  • New position for Brian Dennis
    Effective this month, Brian has accepted a position as fulltime laboratory technician in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (CBE). Brian will work with Souheil Afara to coordinate and deliver the undergraduate labs associated with CBE. Brian began working in Engineering last summer on a sessional basis (8 months/year, not fulltime hours) and we are very pleased that he has accepted this fulltime continuing role.
