Cavity Visualisation

This page shows images of the the laminar flow in a rectangular cavity as it is yawed to the oncoming flow (using Thymol Blue visualisation), together with the flow along the base of yawed cavities under supersonic flow conditions at M = 2 (Liquid Crystal visualisation).

The following image sequence reveals the structure of the dominant vortex in the cavity and the manner in which fluid entrainment and expulsion varies with yaw angle.

The following images show details of the cavity base flow behaviour, towards the downstream end of the cavity, as it is yawed within a M = 2 flow.
