Mother Nature and Old Man Winter may have conspired to put a damper on this year’s edition of March Break Open House. But a late-season snow storm and road closures in many areas across the region couldn’t deter many prospective students and their parents from making the trip to Western to get a first-hand look at what Western Engineering has to offer.

Western Engineering hosted approximately 240 people on Saturday, March 8, between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm.

Visitors were given a presentation first thing in the morning and again in the afternoon, by Acting Dean George Knopf and 3rd year Mechanical & Materials/Law student Rachel Oosterhuis. Afterwards, there was a question and answer period with numerous staff, faculty and student volunteers available to field any inquiries.

University President Paul Davenport also participated, providing the audience with his thoughts on what makes Western the university with Canada’s best student experience.

After the presentations, prospective students and their families were invited on tours of laboratories for each engineering department. Demonstrations were set-up in each lab, with faculty and students showcasing the facilities and answering questions.

Many of Western Engineering’s student groups, such as Sunstang, Mini-baja, Formula SAE, Women in Engineering, Engineers Without Borders, WEBots and the Aero Design team, had information booths and displays set-up outside SEB 1059.

Western Engineering was also pleased to be able to offer the guests an informal sandwich luncheon with Acting Dean George Knopf. This gave the prospective students another opportunity to mingle with current students, faculty and staff, and have their questions and concerns addressed.
