			Western Engineering Shines at the 2009 Ontario Engineering 
			Competition  
			 Western Engineering dominated at the 2009 Ontario Engineering 
			Competition (OEC) hosted by Guelph University, February 6-8, 2009. 6 
			teams of undergraduate engineering students represented Western 
			Engineering; several students came home with top recognition for

			Simonovic publishes book - Managing Water Resources: Methods of 
			Tools for a Systems Approach  
			  This book is a joint publication between the United Nations 
			Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and 
			Earthscan. As one of our main resources for survival and a growing 
			concern for its connection to human health and sanitation, Simonovic 
			believes there is a greater need for information on the analysis of

			Mechatronics robots come to life  
			 Fourth-year mechatronic students have been busy. Beginning back in 
			October 2008, Brendan Bracken, Chris Fischer, Simon Deluce and 
			Brent Biro began working on their final robot project in 
			anticipation for the competition held on the evening of December 1, 
			2008. They spent many long days, often putting in 10 plus hours in 
			the mechatronics lab completing their robot. The week prior to the 
			competition they began testing their robot on the final course to 
			work out all the ‘bugs’ and fine-tune their design.

			Undergraduate Engineering Society Success at Congress   
			 The Undergraduate Engineering Society at Western recently sent eight 
			delegates to the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students 
			Congress conference. Congress is the annual general meeting of all 
			the Engineering Societies in Canada. A Canadian school hosts 
			Congress annually and this year it was hosted by Carleton University 
			at the Westin in Ottawa. The conference took place January 4 to 
			January 10, 2009 and adopted the theme 'The Lifestyle of the 
			Engineer', highlighting that being an engineer is not just a job; 
			it’s an entirely different perspective on one’s daily activities. 
			There were 250 participants from all around Canada, as well as 
			representatives from Spain and Germany in attendance.

				 Western Engineering welcomes Ying Zhang Ying Zhang will be working as an Instrumentation Technician, in 
				 the Chemical & Biochemical Engineering department, with Dr. 
				 Paul Charpentier, Dr. Hugo de Lasa and the other Principal 
				 Investigators in the CFI project “Green Energy and 
				 Environmentally Friendly Chemical Technologies”. Her role will 
				 be to manage the two fully featured Instrumentation 
				 laboratories which will be located in the new Claudette-McKay 
				 Lassonde Pavilion (CMLP).
 
		   Changes in Undergraduate Services OfficeThere have been many changes in the Undergraduate Services Office 
		   recently, including welcoming new staff members and saying farewell 
		   to others. Two temporary staff joined us from Derby Staffing to cover 
		   the Undergraduate Assistant role while we recruited for this position 
		   – Isobel Nicholson and Nicola Coombs. As we say farewell to Isobel 
		   and Nicola we are pleased to welcome Jane Cleveland who has been 
		   hired as the Undergraduate Assistant. As well, Ann Tsirgielis 
		   resigned to pursue a position closer to home at York University
