In memoriam – Doreen Dinsdale

Doreen Dinsdale, 86, a former Western Engineering staff member passed away February 13, 2010.

Doreen worked as a staff member in Western Engineering from 1966 to 1987. She always spoke fondly of Western Engineering and the many wonderful faculty, staff and students she came to know over the years.

In the late 1960s Doreen recognized the very modest female student compliment in Western Engineering and wanted to do something to recognize and encourage young women who wanted to pursue engineering. While still a staff member, she began to make annual gifts to establish an endowment which would be directed to an award for a graduating female student.

The Doreen M. Dinsdale Award was made public after her retirement and is currently offered each spring to a female student graduating in one of Western Engineering’s undergraduate programs who had demonstrated exemplary leadership abilities and involvement in extra-curricular activities in the university or the community.
