Dr. Liu Invited as a Panelist for Western AI & GreenTech Panel
Dr. Liu was invited to participate as a panelist in the AI & GreenTech Panel organized by the Western Sustainability Leaders Program (WSLP) at Western University.
The panel brought together leading researchers to discuss the intersection of artificial intelligence and sustainability, covering topics ranging from renewable energy systems and open technologies to responsible AI governance and engineering applications in complex industrial and environmental systems.
Dr. Liu joined fellow panelists Mark Daley and Joshua Pearce in a dynamic discussion exploring how AI can be applied to improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and support sustainable infrastructure.
During the session, Dr. Liu shared insights from the SustainAI research group on the use of AI and physics-informed machine learning to optimize industrial and environmental systems, including applications in wastewater treatment, energy systems, and digital twins. The discussion also addressed key challenges such as the environmental footprint of AI, life-cycle considerations, and the role of AI in managing complex engineering systems.
The event featured active engagement from both students and staff, with thoughtful questions on emerging AI trends, sustainability trade-offs, and future directions for AI-enabled engineering solutions.
