Welcome to the Research and Graduate Office website. Please take a moment to explore our site to learn more about our innovative graduate programs and the leading-edge research our faculty members are currently undertaking.

My name is Hesham El Naggar and I joined Western Engineering in 1995 as a professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. I was appointed the Associate Dean in 2004 and my current term as Associate Dean – Research and Graduate Studies started in July 1, 2010.

Western Engineering offers a professional graduate program and research graduate program. The first option is a Professional Master of Engineering (MEng) degree, which is a course based degree that typically takes one to two years to complete. The research based graduate programs include Master of Engineering Science (MESc) program and Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science (PhD) program.

The Master of Engineering Science (MESc) program is a two year degree, in which the student has to take four graduate courses and completes a thesis. The Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science (PhD) program is a four-year degree, where the student has to take eight graduate courses and completes a thesis. We offer financial aid to eligible research graduate students (i.e. MESc and PhD students). For more information on our graduate programs, please visit our prospective graduate website.

Our faculty members conduct leading-edge research in topical areas that benefit society. Areas of special expertise include: energy, biomedical applications of mechatronics, natural disaster mitigation and management, water technologies, nanotechnology, and much more. Students at the undergraduate and graduate level benefit from this knowledge, as faculty members draw from their research to teach in our classrooms. To explore the different areas or research that our faculty members specialize in, please visit our research website.

The Research and Graduate Office is committed to providing graduate students with the best experience while they study at Western Engineering. The Research and Graduate Office is also committed to supporting faculty members as they endeavor to pioneer with their research. We are also able to bridge the link between faculty members and industry.
