Awards & Accomplishments

  • Western Engineering Students and Faculty Honoured at USC Awards of Excellence
    Some of Western’s best and brightest were honoured this month by the University Students’ Council at their annual awards ceremony. Western Engineering was represented by a very strong showing of both students and faculty. (more)

  • Professor Amarjeet Bassi named new Associate Dean
    Professor Amarjeet Bassi has been announced as the new Associate Dean (Academic) of Western Engineering, effective March 1, 2008 to December 31, 2012. (more)

  • Professor Amarjeet Bassi appointed associate editor, receives grant for research
    Professor Bassi, from the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, was named associate editor for the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering in February. He also received an NSERC Idea-to Innovation grant. (more)

  • NSERC Strategic Special Projects Grant awarded to Western Engineering team
    Dr. Amarjeet Bassi, Dr. J. Zhu and Dr. A. Ray from the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, along with co-investigator Dr. A. Dalai from the University of Saskatchewan, have been awarded an NSERC Strategic Special Projects Grant. (more)

  • WE student Julie Ladiges wins HP Scholarship
    Congratulations to Julie for winning one of two Hewlett-Packard Scholarships (HP) available to female engineering students this year. (more)

  • WE student Melissa Fabian wins first prize in CBE 415
    Congratulations to 4th year Chemical and Biochemical Engineering student Melissa Fabian for her first place award in CBE 415. (more)

  • Students compete in Canadian Engineering Competition
    Well done to the Western Engineering teams who traveled to the University of Waterloo on March 6 to 9, 2008 to compete in the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC). (more)

  • John M. Thompson named Chancellor at Western
    Western Engineering was delighted to learn that John M. Thompson, BESc. ’66, will be appointed as Western’s 20th Chancellor. (more)

  • Budget highlights alternative energy project
    A university-friendly budget unveiled by the provincial government this week includes $7.5 million for The University of Western Ontario to develop promising interdisciplinary research that could turn agricultural waste into chemicals and energy. (more)

    Making a Difference

  • Engineers Without Borders Profile
    Students who choose to attend university in North America often arrive at school with the notion that a good post-secondary education will broaden their horizons and open their minds to new ideas and opportunities. While that is an accurate expectation for most, much of the growth and learning that occurs at university happens within the sheltered confines of the lecture hall and the boundaries of the campus.     NSERC is looking for master's and Ph.D. students in natural sciences or engineering who are in their final year or have recently graduated and who can take a fresh look at their research with an eye to commercialization. (more)

    Lightspeed Venture Partners, a Silicon Valley Venture Capital firm, is offering grants for undergraduate and graduate students studying engineering and computer science who are interested in exploring an entrepreneurial opportunity over the summer of 2008 in the technology or alternative energy fields.   • Call for MITACS Project Proposals
    MITACS is soliciting proposals for new seed projects. Seed projects are expected to span 12-18 months duration. (more).
