WECCA will once again be building a new canoe this year out of concrete. Unlike traditional concrete (which uses heavy aggregates like stone and sand), we mix our concrete with glass microspheres and other light materials, including at least two recycled aggregates.

With our biggest and most experienced team ever, WECCA is looking forward to a great year and excited to try some novel techniques and materials.

The Canoe
Each year we perform computer aided hull analysis and extensive material tests in order to redesign our:
  • Hull
  • Concrete Mix
  • Mould
  • Concrete Reinforcement
We then construct our mould based on cross sections of the computer model and cast our canoe. The canoe takes 28 days of curing to reach full strength, after which we put in hundreds of hours of sanding and stain the canoe with a unique design created by one of our members.
The Racers
Over the past five years WECCA has established itself as the dominant racing team from Ontario. This year we have continued that streak with a victory at the Ready Mix Concrete Association of Ontario Conference in September, and have begun a rigorous training program to prepare for the CSCE Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition in May. Our racers participate in two strength training sessions per week and one paddling techniques session at a pool.
