First Year Summer Courses

You have the opportunity to begin your degree this summer instead of waiting until September.  We are offering two distance learning (online) courses this summer: ES 1021A “Properties of Materials” and AM 1413 “Applied Math for Engineers I”.  Taking one of these courses this summer will ease your transition into university and give you a head start on your studies.

If you are confident in your knowledge of the engineering pre-requisite courses and willing to dedicate study time this summer, then this opportunity may be for you.  As the courses are condensed, the material is covered at a fast pace, and it is recommended that you allow 6 hours per day dedicated to a course.

If you think this opportunity is for you and want to register to take ES 1021A or AM 1413 this summer, complete the form below by June 21, 2020.

Course Details:

ES 1021A "Properties of Materials"

Half Course, July 6 - July 24

An introduction to the relationship between the microstructure and engineering properties of metals, ceramics, polymers, semi-conductors and composites.

AM 1413 “Applied math for Engineers I”

Full Course, July 6 - August 14

Limits, continuity, differentiation of functions of one variable with applications, extreme values, integration, the fundamental theorem of calculus, methods and applications of integration to areas, volumes and engineering applications. Sequences and series, convergence, power series. Vector functions, partial differential calculus, gradients, directional derivatives and applications.

Course Terms and Conditions

  • Students who do not meet the conditions of their offer of admission will not progress to full-time status in September regardless of their performance in either course. Students will, however, retain the course credit with a successful pass.
  • A successful pass in one of these courses will mean that students who are admitted into the Fall do not have to take the course during the September to May academic year. This would reduce the workload during the academic year.
  • The courses are offered in accordance with the fees and refund schedule set by the Office of the Registrar.
  • The deadline to drop ES 1021A without academic penalty is July 17, 2020. The deadline to drop AM 1413 without academic penalty is July 24, 2020. After the start of the class, the amount of refund changes weekly according to the refund schedule: https://registrar.uwo.ca/student_finances/fees_refunds/fee_refund_schedules.html
  • Students will require a Western One Identification Card. There is a $32 one-time fee to set up this card.
  • Students will have access to services provided by Western University, noting that services may be modified due to COVID-19.
  • The full-time tuition for the September to May academic year will remain the same and will not be reduced.
  • Students will not be eligible for OSAP and possibly other government aid for the summer courses. Please contact lbriens@uwo.ca if you have demonstrated financial need.
