“RESTORE is cool. Our driving forces are our passionate and motivated students who are led by dynamic and supportive supervisors. With suggestions and feedbacks from colleagues, research environment could probably have not been any better than what we celebrate at RESTORE in the beautiful campus of Western. At RESTORE it is not only about relentless striving to understand the science of groundwater but also in part about fun socials like the “Bollywood Hungama Night!!” or the weekly ice cream social."

Project Title:
Mobility of nZVI in the Subsurface under the Influence of Electrokinetics.

Project Description:
Nano-scale Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) is gaining increasing attention as a potential material for the remediation of Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPLs). However, nZVIs are reactive over a short span of time. Hence, delivering these particles in the source zone while they are reactive is a major concern. Particularly, in soils with low hydraulic conductivity (i.e. clay) the mobility is a big challenge. Electrokinetics, the application of direct electric current, is expected to enhance the transport of nZVI to the target zone, even through clayey soils. Hence, the focus of my research is to explore the application of Electrokinetics to increase the mobility of nZVI in subsurface environment.

Personal Background:
I completed my Bachelors from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in June 2005. After my graduation, I worked as a lecturer at the Presidency University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. I have also worked as a part time faculty at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Bangladesh and also as a research assistant in BUET. I was one of the organizers for the 1st International Conference on Road Safety in Developing Countries organized by Accident Research Institure (ARI). Teaching is my passion and I hope to build a career in academia. After successfully graduating with an MESc in Environmental Engineering with RESTORE at the University of Western Ontario, I am continuing my studies with RESTORE and I am currently in my first year of a PhD.
