Multidimensional Analysis of Smouldering Combustion: Advancing Smouldering Characteristics Understanding in the Context of STAR Remediation of Soil

Smouldering combustion is defined as a surface oxidation reaction applicable to porous materials such as porous organic solids or liquids embedded in an inert porous matrix. Recently, subsurface smouldering was performed to destroy non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) as an emerging remediation technique (Self-sustaining Treatment for Active Remediation (STAR)). The features of new technology include less energy input, recycling energy, high efficiency and self-sustaining. The aim of this project is to gain a deep understanding of the characteristics of smouldering combustion for remediation of organic liquid in the soil. Multi-dimensional models are developed in COMSOL Multiphysics taking into account Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium model and Heat transfer coefficient model between sand and gas that are more recent achievements in this area. The numerical models are calibrated by the experimental investigation conducted in the Western University as the leader in the research and treatability studies into the most industry-driven STAR project.

Personal Background

Zia joined the RESTORE group as a PhD student from January 2019. He received his master in mechanical engineering from University of Tehran in January 2014. His previous academic background was the investigation of nanofluid thermal performance in a miniature heatsink using jet impingement cooling. The results of his research were published in five reliable journal papers. Now, He has the opportunity to deal with some of the most challenging environmental issues.
