Engineering Western’s future

Engineers commonly use the acronym ERTW – Engineers Rule The World. Today, this acronym can also stand for Engineers Rule Western as the university is currently being led by professional engineers: John Thompson, BESc’ 66, LLD’ 94 (Western’s Chancellor), Amit Chakma (Western’s President and Vice-Chancellor), and Andrew Hrymak (Dean, Faculty of Engineering).
To celebrate this milestone, a Western Engineering Leaders Reception was held November 3, 2010 at the TD Bank Tower in Toronto, Ontario. Over 100 alumni and friends gathered for this event, to mingle with engineering colleagues and friends, and to hear from Western’s leadership about the future of Engineering and the University.
“When I joined Western Engineering as Dean in July 2009 I was very much looking forward to working with the Engineering faculty and staff to provide a rewarding engineering education to our students and create opportunities for internationally competitive research and growth,” explained Hrymak. “Western Engineering is providing me an excellent opportunity to further my goals, and I am inspired to assist the Faculty to grow to new heights.”
Western Engineering has certainly grown to new heights since Dean Hrymak’s arrival just over one year ago.
At the undergraduate level, Western Engineering is now offering nine professional programs; the most recent additions being Green Process Engineering and Mechatronic Systems Engineering. New certificate programs, such a WE Go Global and Practical Elements in Mechanical Engineering, are allowing undergraduate engineering students the option to further expand their education with hands-on, global knowledge of the profession.
Graduate opportunities are continuing to grow and flourish with options to complete a Master of Engineering Science (MESc), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and increasing number of Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees options, providing students the opportunity to complete a strictly course-based, master-level engineering degree or a combination of course-work and a project.
“Our students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, have the opportunity to learn from some of the best researchers in Canada,” says Hrymak. “Western Engineering is excelling in the areas of earth, wind, water, power and what I like to refer as life, in general.”
Western Engineering’s research strengths are also assisting the University to meet its goals to raise Western’s global profile.
“As our new Dean, Andy is doing a fantastic job leading our Faculty of Engineering,” noted President Chakma. “Andy is a great leader who shares our vision of making Western one of the world’s great universities, and I want to thank him for all the good work that he does.”
