NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Spine and Trauma Biomechanics and Mechatronics


Applications are invited from exceptional candidates for the proposed position of NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Spine and Trauma Biomechanics and Mechatronics in the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, effective July 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant will receive a Probationary (tenure track) at the rank of Assistant or Associate, or Tenured at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The rank and tenure status will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The position will be a joint appointment with the Department of Surgery, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. This academic position is conditional upon being a successful recipient of the NSERC Industrial Research Chair award.

For a probationary appointment, successful candidates will have completed a Ph.D. degree in the appropriate Engineering field, or a closely related discipline, demonstrate excellence or clear promise of excellence in research, including evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates independent research potential leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding.

For a tenured appointment, successful candidates will have completed a Ph.D. degree in the appropriate Engineering field, provide evidence of excellence in research and impact through publications in the highest quality journals, and have an established internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program, with evidence of interdisciplinary collaborations. An exceptional profile with respect to teaching and training of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels is also required.

The Faculty of Engineering at Western University, in collaboration with Medtronic as the industrial partner, seeks an energetic and dynamic candidate who will be able to contribute to research and teaching efforts as well as other aspects of academic service. Qualified applicants must have a PhD and advanced training in biomechanical engineering with a clear focus on human biomechanics, such as orthopaedic biomechanics, computational modeling and/or mechanobiology. The successful candidate will have demonstrated outstanding research potential and an independent publication record. He or she will be expected to develop and maintain an ongoing vigorous research program in collaboration with faculty within the Department of Surgery and academic researchers at Victoria Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. He or she will be expected to attract external research funding, supervise graduate students, as well as teach undergraduate and graduate courses. The appointment will be in the Faculty of Engineering, with a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The appointee will join an established team of researchers with complementary expertise, and have the opportunity to conduct research in musculoskeletal biomechanics within internationally renowned centres and facilities at Western University. These include: the Dr. Sandy Kirkley Centre for Musculoskeletal Research; Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratories; Biomedical Imaging Research Centre; Skeletal Biology Laboratories; Rorabeck Bourne Joint Replacement Clinic; Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre; Orthopaedic Spine Centre; and Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic.

The appointment is contingent upon the successful award from the NSERC Industrial Research Chair program ( The criteria for that program include (but are not limited to): proposal must be in an area of high priority for both the university and the industrial partner, and candidates must have (a) demonstrated exceptional promise relative to their peers in their field of research, (b) demonstrated the capacity to conduct a significant independent research activity, (c) a significant publication and Highly Qualified Personnel training record, and (d) the ability to interact with industry and nurture partnerships. The Industrial Research Chair application to NSERC will be developed as a joint effort between the University, the industrial partner, and the successful candidate.
