Q&A with Toby Ma

I loved how many clubs and resources there were for engineering students! As well, I loved having the common first-year so that I could be introduced to each discipline!

Why Western Engineering?
I choose Western Engineering because I can do a dual degree with my Ivey AEO. I was also intrigued by the amazing culture and community Western Engineering has. As we have an amazing support system and tons of cool traditions.
What do you do in your spare time?
I like to read, watch netflix, ski, and play video games.
What was your orientation week experience like as a first-year student?
I made lots of new friends during o-week, and it was one of the best weeks of my life. Everyone I met on campus were so kind and helpful, and there were tons of fun events going on throughout the week. No matter what you’re into, you’re gonna find someone who shares similar interests and probably an event that you’ll love. I also got to participate and witness tons of interesting engineering traditions as well as learn about the many engineering lores.
Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?
I chose software engineering because when I took programming classes in high school and out of high school I always understood things very quickly and I always got the best grades. When time came to apply for universities, I decided that a software engineering degree would match my skillset while being extremely valuable.
What is your favourite book, movie, or TV show?
My favourite book/TV show is Lord of the Mysteries, it’s a webnovel that is widely regarded as the best webnovel ever written and has just recently been made into a TV show. The story takes place in a steampunk Victorian setting with magic and mysticism, whilst involving many cthulhu-esque elements.
Who do you look up to/admire and why?
Someone interesting I admire is Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States. I believe he is quite remarkable because he was able to gain the trust of the Dixiecrats whilst still garnering support from the civil rights community. Ultimately outsmarting the Dixiecrats and passing the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. All while he was appointed to be president after the assassination of JFK. I believe his wit is something truly exceptional and worth admiring.
