Western Engineering FIRST Robotics Mentorship Club
The goal of the Western Engineering FIRST Robotics Mentorship Club (WE FIRST) is to provide an open atmosphere where students of any discipline and any skill level, who are willing to mentor FIRST Robotics high school teams from London area, can learn about robots, help construct them, and provide their technical, non-technical or managerial expertise and moral support to the high school students exploring the world of robotics.
While being a part of this club, the students develop important team building skills such as, allowing and encouraging independent thought, opening communication within the team, fostering a reciprocal foundation of trust and respect, encouraging effective facilitation, developing roles within the team and transferring leadership. The club members also develop interest in robotics, commitment to a cause, and confidence in one's abilities, and subsequently have the satisfaction of having done an important job by being a positive influence and giving something to their community.
The club looks forward to mentor multiple high school teams simultaneously and the members are free to select the team they wish to work with, and even bring in new high school teams that they wish to mentor. Further, members are encouraged to teach one another, and help those that may not yet have experience building robots and programming them. Along with our primary goal, we are trying to build a strong knowledge base in the hands-on construction of specialized robots, from the mechanical systems, to the electronic circuits, and even the software to run the robots. Any student with any level of skill is therefore invited to join us and participate where he/she feels led, and hopefully learn a great deal along the way.
Our long term goal is to help develop an understanding of the mentoring process and associated relationships that should develop during a team’s evolution. We provide the students a platform to learn to apply the concepts they have learned through their courses and real life experiences in the field of robotics, develop new perspectives from the young minds brainstorming and working under their tutelage, and learn technical and organizational skills while executing mentoring roles.
